BeliefsTo say the least, ancient Egypt was an extremely polytheistic society. There are upwards of 2,000 gods and goddesses in record[1], if only because there are so many that merely had a local following.
Temples were also a big part of the polytheistic beliefs of Egypt - they were in each city, seeing as how the gods were almost broken down by city. The temple was meant to be a "cosmic center" for men to have direct communication with the gods in each city across Egypt.[1] Just as the gods are numerous, the creation stories associated with the Egyptian religion are, too. Many versions all denote the Sun God Ra appearing in one way or another to bring life to Egypt and the world, and one even denotes him as a scarab beetle on the eastern horizon. This may be a reason why Khepri was created.[1] |
